Handpicked Reviews
Editorial picks, compared and dated.

Air quality and air movement solve different problems, but they share one constraint: they only help if you leave them running. Noise and running cost decide that. We compared three LEVOIT purifiers and two DREO pedestal fans on room size, noise on the sleep setting and how much the filters cost to replace.

Buyer's Guide
Size the purifier to the room
CADR figures tell you the room size a purifier can actually clean. Undersizing is the most common mistake - a bedroom unit will not fix a living room.
Noise is the feature that matters at night
Look for the decibel figure on the lowest setting, not the highest airflow. Anything much above 25dB is noticeable in a quiet bedroom.
Filter cost over time
Replacement filters are the real running cost. Check price and interval before buying, because a cheap unit with expensive filters is not cheap.
Fans move air, they do not clean it
A pedestal fan helps with heat and stuffiness. It will not remove particles - if allergies are the issue, buy the purifier first.
Oscillation and remote control
Wide oscillation and a remote make a fan genuinely usable overnight. Smart control adds scheduling, which saves more energy than it sounds.
FAQ
If allergies, pets or dust are the problem, the purifier. If it is heat and stuffiness, the fan.

On their lowest settings, yes - keep them a metre or two from the bed.
