Editorial picks, compared and dated.

A carport is either a fabric canopy on a tube frame or a steel building with a roof, and the price difference is not the only difference. A canopy costs a few hundred dollars, installs in a weekend and needs replacing after a few winters. A steel carport costs several times more, needs anchoring and often a permit, and lasts decades. We compared eight current options from $110 to $1,700 on frame gauge, anchoring, wind rating and what each one does in snow.

Buyer's Guide
Canopy or steel: pick by years, not by price
A canopy carport is a temporary shelter: expect three to five winters from a good one, and a replacement cover every couple of years. A galvanised steel carport is a structure. If you are staying put and the car is worth protecting, steel is cheaper per year over a decade.
Frame gauge and tube diameter
Thicker tube and more legs mean less flex in wind. A 12x20 canopy on 1.5-inch tube behaves very differently from the same cover on 2-inch tube with cross bracing. The specification that matters is the steel thickness, not the total weight of the box.
Wind and snow ratings
Manufacturers publish a wind rating and, less often, a snow load. A 20x20 canopy rated for 60 mph will not survive a storm that a steel carport rated for 100 mph shrugs off. If you live where snow sits on the roof, either buy steel or plan to clear the canopy after every storm.
Anchoring decides whether it stays
Every carport in this guide will fly in a serious wind if it is only staked into grass. Concrete anchors, asphalt anchors or ground screws are the difference between a shelter and a projectile. Budget for the anchor kit even when it is sold separately.
Size: one car, two cars, or a car and a door
A 10x15 shelter fits one car with room to open the doors. A 12x20 fits one car comfortably or two small ones tightly. A 20x20 or larger is the realistic two-car size. Measure the height you need for a roof box or a van before choosing.
Permits and placement
Many jurisdictions treat a steel carport over a certain size as a structure that needs a permit, and some HOAs prohibit fabric canopies entirely. Check before you buy, and place the shelter so run-off does not drain toward the house or a neighbour.
FAQ
A good one lasts three to five years on the frame and needs a replacement cover after two to three, depending on UV exposure and wind. Steel carports last decades if they are anchored properly.
Often yes for a permanent steel structure, and rules vary by county and by size. Fabric canopies are usually exempt but frequently banned by HOAs. Check locally first.
Steel carports are rated for a snow load; most canopies are not. In snow country, clear the canopy after every storm or buy steel.
Concrete anchors on a slab, asphalt anchors on a driveway, or ground screws into soil. Stakes alone are not enough in wind.
Some do. If you buy through them we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you, and it never changes the ranking.
