Editorial picks, compared and dated.

A home sauna is either a tent you zip yourself into or a cabin that takes a weekend to assemble, and the two are not variations of the same product. Steam and portable units cost less than $200, run off a normal socket and heat up in ten minutes. Full-size infrared cabins cost twenty times as much, need their own circuit and are a piece of furniture. We compared eight current models from $93 to $2,199 on heat-up time, heating type and running cost.

Buyer's Guide
Steam and infrared are different experiences
A steam sauna heats the air with a heater and a water reservoir; you feel the heat on your skin and the " "humidity in your lungs. Infrared warms your body directly with radiant panels, at a lower air temperature, " "which most people find easier to sit in for twenty minutes. Neither is better: steam feels like a " "traditional sauna, infrared feels gentler and is easier to install in a spare room.
Portable first if you are unsure
A tent or a sauna box costs under $200, folds away, and answers the real question: will you actually use it " "three times a week in February? If the answer is yes after a winter, a cabin is worth the money. If not, you " "have spent a tenth of the price finding out.
Heat-up time and power
Portable steam units reach temperature in 8 to 12 minutes on a 1200 to 1500W heater, which is a normal " "household socket. Full-size infrared cabins take 20 to 40 minutes and typically need a dedicated 15A or 20A " "circuit. Check the plug before you check the price.
Panel count and low EMF
Infrared cabins are sold by panel count: more panels means more even heat and faster warm-up. Low-EMF " "ratings matter if you sit close to the panels for long sessions, and any cabin worth buying publishes the " "measurement rather than the word.
Where it goes and what it does to the room
A cabin needs floor space, a ceiling height allowance and ventilation. Steam raises the humidity of the whole " "room, so a bathroom with an extractor fan is the sensible location. Infrared is dry and can go in a bedroom " "or a converted garage, but it is furniture: measure the footprint before ordering.
Running cost is the number nobody prints
A 1500W heater costs roughly the same per hour as a small space heater, so twenty minutes a day is a few " "dollars a month. A full-size cabin at 2000W for forty minutes costs about twice that. If running cost " "matters, buy the smaller unit and use it more often.
FAQ
Yes, for what they are: a 1200 to 1500W steam unit gets a small enclosure to temperature in about ten minutes, and you sweat. They are not the same as a cabin, and they cost a tenth as much.
Infrared if it is going in a bedroom or spare room and you want a dry, gentle session. Steam if you want the traditional feel and have a bathroom with an extractor fan.
A 1500W portable unit used twenty minutes a day costs a few dollars a month at typical US electricity rates. A 2000W full-size cabin used for forty minutes roughly doubles that.
A one-person infrared cabin is about the footprint of a wardrobe and needs roughly 2 metres of ceiling height for the two-person models. Measure the door it has to come through as well.
