Editorial picks, compared and dated.

A sofa is the one piece of furniture you cannot return by post. The differences that matter are the ones you cannot see in a photo: what the frame is made of, what is inside the cushions, and whether the modules actually line up after a year of use. We compared eight current models from $100 to $1,300 on frame and fill, modular flexibility, sleeper mechanisms and how they fit a real living room rather than a showroom.

Buyer's Guide
Frame first, fabric second
A hardwood or plywood frame with corner blocks lasts; particle board and staples do not. Fabric is the part you can change with a cover; the frame is the part that decides whether the sofa still feels solid in year three. If a listing does not say what the frame is, treat that as a warning.
Cushion fill decides how it sits
Foam wrapped in fibre is the middle ground and what most mid-price sofas use. Pocket springs inside foam feel more like a mattress and hold their shape longer. Down is comfortable and needs fluffing daily. If you want a firm seat that does not sag, look for high-density foam and a spring core, not for a higher price.
Modular means it fits the room you have
A sectional with separate modules can be re-arranged, extended later and carried up a narrow staircase one box at a time. A single fixed frame cannot. If your doorway is tight or you might move, modular is worth the extra cost.
Sleeper sofas: check the mechanism, not the mattress
A pull-out sleeper is heavy, and the bar under the mattress is what guests remember. Look for a mechanism that folds flat, a mattress that is at least 4.5 inches thick, and a weight rating for the frame. A convertible chair is a better buy than a bad sleeper if you only host one person.
Measure twice, including the doorway
Measure the wall you want to fill and the diagonal of the tightest doorway on the route in. Then check the seat depth: 20 inches suits sitting upright, 24 inches is for lounging, and anything deeper swallows shorter people. Sectional chaises add 15 to 25 inches on one end.
Assembly and delivery
Most sofas in this range ship flat and assemble with brackets and a hex key in under an hour. Two people make it faster and prevent the frame from twisting. Keep the boxes until you are sure: returning a sofa without its original packaging is a negotiation.
FAQ
A $300-$500 modular sofa with a solid frame and foam-and-fibre cushions is a reasonable first sofa or a good second-room piece. What you are giving up is fabric quality and long-term cushion support, not necessarily the frame.
A sectional if the room has a corner and you want seating for four or more. A standard sofa if you need to move it through a narrow door or want to rearrange the room later.
With a mattress at least 4.5 inches thick and a flat-folding bar, yes for a few nights. Used as a daily bed, a dedicated mattress beats any pull-out mechanism.
Rotate and flip them monthly, and choose foam with a spring core over plain foam. Covers that can be washed extend the life of the fabric considerably.
Some do. If you buy through them we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you, and it never changes the ranking.
