Electric Space Heaters FAQ
Start with the room as it is on a cold evening, not with a square-footage chart. A heater that copes in a sealed interior room will cycle nonstop in a corner room with exterior walls and a large window. Note the walls that face outside, the ceiling height, then compare heat output at each setting. If the unit cannot hold temperature, it is undersized.
More than most buyers expect. A thermostat reads the air where the unit sits, so a heater tucked behind a sofa or beside an open door measures the wrong room and either short-cycles or runs nonstop. Keep the intake and exhaust clear, face the unit into open floor, and put it where the warmest air can drift toward the people in the room. If you cannot clear both openings, pick a different spot.
Not in the way you want. A heater at its top setting raises the temperature quickly, then a sloppy thermostat overshoots and the room swings hot, cold, hot. Our comparison looks at real heat output at each setting and thermostat accuracy for this reason: a unit that holds a steady mid setting beats one that sprints and stalls. If the room yo-yos, blame the thermostat control.
Less than a kitchen appliance, but not none. Dust on the intake grille and any washable filter starves airflow, which quietly cuts the heat you paid for and makes the thermostat work harder. Vacuum or rinse before the cold season starts and again mid-winter if the room is dusty. If the grille clogs and output drops, that is a cleaning problem, not a dead unit.
Compare running cost per hour, not the shelf price. A cheaper unit that sits on its top setting all evening can cost more to own than a pricier one that holds a low setting and shuts off. Estimate the hours you will actually run it, multiply by the hourly figure for your setting, and compare that against the purchase price. If you heat a room all day, running cost decides.
Run the unit in the room you bought it for, on the setting you will actually use, for the first evenings. Watch whether it holds temperature without constant cycling and whether the thermostat matches the room. Keep the box and receipt until then. Few models clear our bar each month, so we would rather list a short page than pad it with units we cannot stand behind.
