How do I choose a size for a desk fan versus a pram fan?
Picture a hot afternoon at a desk, then a pram with a sleeping baby under a canopy; those two mounts do not want the same fan. Start from the footprint, not the blade — a wide guard on a narrow base tips, and a fat clamp will not close around a slim pram bar. If the jaw is narrower than the bar, keep looking.
Where can a personal fan actually be mounted, and what does that rule out?
Two mounting situations matter here: a desk and a pram. A clip fan with padded jaws grips a pram frame but skates across a glossy desktop; a flat-base fan is stable on a desk and has nothing to grip a bar with. Pick the mount you will use daily, because a fan that has to be re-clipped every time gets left in a drawer.
Will it move enough air without being too loud to sit next to?
Airflow against noise is the tradeoff this category turns on, and the two move in opposite directions at the same setting. A fan pushing hard at arm's length will hum; dropping one speed usually buys back the quiet. Position does more than spec: a gentle fan aimed at your face beats a strong one blowing past your ear.
What upkeep does a personal fan need, and how long does cleaning take?
A guard sitting in moving air all day collects dust faster than you expect, and a furry guard both cuts airflow and adds a whine you will blame on the motor. If the front guard does not release, cleaning is a damp cloth on the outside only. If it does, it is a rinse-and-air-dry job at the sink — less time than boiling a kettle.
What does a personal fan really cost over its life?
Purchase price is the small part. Battery runtime only helps if the cell can be replaced or recharged, so figure in replacement cells or a nightly charge cable; a fan with proprietary cells can be stranded once they fade. The other cost is patience: a fan that is awkward to clean gets replaced long before its motor wears out.
What should I check about warranty and returns?
Ask whether the battery is covered. Cells fade first, and plenty of warranties promise the motor while excluding the part that actually fails. Returns are the other half: a fan you have already clamped and used has to be packaged back up, so keep the packaging until the mount proves itself. In this category the verifiable comparison is airflow, noise, runtime and mounting — anything else on the box is decoration.
