Portable Air Conditioners FAQ
Size by cooling load, not by the box on the pallet: burners, an oven, and bodies in the room all add heat the BTU rating has to beat. Compare rated BTU against the room's square footage on the manufacturer's chart, subtract for a sunny wall, add for open-plan. Undersized units run continuously and never cycle off.
Single-hose models pull room air and push it out the window, so the hose panel has to seal — a slider or casement that won't close on the panel makes the unit fight itself. Keep the exhaust run short and straight, leave clearance at the intake. If your only window cranks open, budget for a panel kit that fits it.
Run it before the oven goes on and leave it running after the plates are cleared; it has to pull the heat cooking dumped into the room, and switching it on mid-meal just adds fan noise to a hot kitchen. Overnight, compressor cycling is what wakes light sleepers. Check the noise figure before buying.
Two jobs: the filter and the condensate. Rinse the filter on the same rhythm as your range hood filter, because kitchen grease loads it faster than bedroom dust. Most units either self-evaporate or collect water in a tank you dump, and humid weather means more dumping. Skip any model whose drain plug you can't reach.
The purchase price is the small number. Running cost tracks the compressor, and a single-hose unit that throws conditioned air out with the exhaust runs longer to hold a temperature than a dual-hose design drawing outside air. Add filter replacements and a panel kit. If your bill matters more than portability, a window unit does the same job cheaper.
Confirm two things before the return window closes: whether venting through a window as instructed is required to keep the warranty valid, and who pays return freight on a compressor failure. These units are heavy and that bill lands on you more often than buyers expect. Keep the panel and hose boxed for shipping back.
