Floor Lamps FAQ
Size by task, not room area. A reading lamp's shade bottom should land at or just below your seated eye line; ambient corner lamps can run taller, above any seated sightline. Measure the furniture it stands beside first. If the shade is wider than the chair arm it serves, it throws shadow across the page instead of light. Our verified pool for this page is thin, so treat these as checks, not a ranking.
Walk the outlet run before you buy. Cord length and switch position decide placement more often than the shade does: a foot switch needs clearance to step on, an inline switch needs to fall where your hand already is. Keep the cord out of walkways and away from heat sources. If the nearest receptacle sits behind furniture, treat a longer cord as a requirement, not a bonus.
Performance is mostly the socket and the shade, not the silhouette. A three-way socket gives you low ambient and full task output from one fixture; a single-setting socket forces you to pick one. Shade material decides glare — opaque shades throw light down and up, sheer ones wash the whole room and cut contrast for reading. If you read nightly, prioritize a socket with a dimmable middle step.
Bulbs are the consumable, and socket type governs what fits — match the base and the fixture's stated maximum wattage rather than buying the brightest bulb on the shelf. Clean shades dry; fabric shades hold dust and cooking aerosol, so vacuum them or they yellow unevenly. Check the cord and strain relief at the plug seasonally. If the lamp wobbles, the base joint has loosened; tighten it before it stresses the cord.
Running cost is wattage times hours times your kWh rate — no lamp is cheap to run if it is on all evening. Compare the fixture's stated maximum wattage against the bulb you intend to fit; a lamp rated for higher output invites you to burn more. Dimming and LED retrofits cut the bill more than any finish upgrade. If your rate is high and the lamp runs nightly, calculate before you buy.
Warranty usually covers the electrical assembly and excludes the finish, shade, and bulb — read the exclusion list, not the term. Keep the receipt and the carton through the return window; floor lamps ship oversized and return shipping is often on you. Test the switch and socket on arrival, before the window closes. If it arrives dented, photograph the packaging before assembly, since damage claims depend on it.
