Job Site Lighting FAQ
Start from the surface being lit, not the fixture. Work out where a stand can sit safely and how wide the beam has to spread at the point of work; a tight spot and a broad wash need different optics, and splitting output across several heads beats an oversized unit that blinds anyone beneath it. If nothing can stand inside the reach you need, the light is the wrong one, whatever its output rating.
Do this before anything is energized. Treat corded and battery-powered units as different builds: corded means a cord path plus a protected supply you have confirmed, battery means spare packs kept charged and dry. Keep heads out of walk routes and away from standing water, and do not improvise a connection on a live circuit.
Output you can aim and hold beats raw peak output. Check whether the head dims or steps down as its supply drops, because a fixture that fades late in the shift changes how the crew works. Glare and heat matter too — a beam that washes out the surface being marked is a net loss. We compare only fixtures with published, verifiable specs, so this shortlist is genuinely short.
Expect the lens, the cord and the battery pack to be the wear items, not the emitter. Dust and dried mud cut usable output long before anything fails electrically, so clean the lens and reflector and inspect strain reliefs each time the cord is coiled. Spread the load across packs so no single one carries the week, and check which parts are sold separately — often the emitter is not one of them.
Purchase price is rarely the real cost. On battery platforms you are buying into a cell family, so replacement packs and later tools are what you keep paying for; corded units move the cost into extension cords, a protected supply and generator fuel. Add theft and breakage on shared sites. If the crew already runs one battery platform, staying inside it usually costs less than mixing.
Claims fail on a short, predictable list: water that got past a seal someone opened, a cut or spliced cord, and no proof of purchase. Packs and fixtures are generally covered separately, so a dead pack does not mean a new head. Ask who does service locally before buying — if the only answer is the original seller, that seller's return window is the coverage you actually have.
