Picture & Display Lighting FAQ
Start from the artwork's outer frame and the viewing distance, not from a fixture count. Light spread widens with throw, so a canvas hung high on a stairwell needs different aiming than one at eye level. A quick on-site check: if the frame throws a hard shadow line onto the wall, pull the head back and re-aim.
Decide plug-in or hardwired first; that choice drives everything downstream. Confirm a junction box exists at the height you want, and that the circuit isn't already loaded by the room's receptacles. Corded models need a reachable outlet and a cord that clears the frame; otherwise you're paying an electrician, which often costs more than the fixture.
Beam control and dimming range matter more than raw output. Wide floods wash the wall and flatten texture; narrow spots punch a hot spot. Check the dimmer protocol against your wall control before wiring — a head that only dims to a harsh low end will look wrong in the evening. Also check color consistency across multiple heads.
Lens dust and re-aiming, mostly. Dust on a lens or a picture light's diffuser cuts output and shifts color warmer, so wipe heads whenever you dust the frame. Re-check aim afterward, because heads drift. If the lamp or LED module isn't user-replaceable, cleaning is all you can do — replacement becomes a fixture swap.
Electricity is the small line. The real expense is serviceability: a fixture with a user-replaceable lamp or driver costs a part, while a sealed head costs the whole unit plus another install. Weigh that against a low purchase price. Also count access labor if reaching the fixture means scaffolding or a ladder on stairs.
That the driver and the finish are both covered — many policies exclude one of them. Confirm the exchange period covers your install date, not just delivery, since damage often shows up after mounting. Ask whether the seller stocks replacement mounting hardware. Few listings in this category publish spec sheets, so if the seller can't answer, treat that as the answer.
