Home Security Systems FAQ
Count the doors and ground-floor windows you can actually reinforce, not the rooms you own. A panel's zone capacity matters more than its camera count: a kit whose sensor count already equals your openings leaves no room to expand. If it ships more sensors than you have exterior openings, you are buying shelf clutter. We name no models this month — the verifiable pool is too thin to rank.
Judge the frame before the lock. Walk the door: push it shut and watch for racking, then tighten a strike-plate screw and see whether it bites wood or spins in trim. A deadbolt, smart or not, fails at a hollow frame. In a rental, use non-permanent mounting only — no new bores, no permanent strike-plate replacement. If the screws spin, fix the frame before buying anything.
Treat the keypad as primary and the app as convenience, not security. Fingerprint readers struggle with wet or cold fingers and gloves; cameras lose detail in glare and go dark when Wi-Fi drops. Run the failure checklist monthly: key turns with the door shut, keypad code works, battery reports above empty, network down but lock still opens.
Consumables are batteries and alignment, in that order. Replace every lock, keypad and sensor battery on the same day so a single dead cell can't drop a zone silently. In humid months, watch the door for swelling: a strike plate that lined up in winter can bind in summer. Wipe camera lenses; relocate motion sensors away from vents and pets.
Monitoring subscriptions, not hardware, set your long-run cost. Add cellular backup, replacement sensors and batteries, and the yearly figure usually beats the sticker price by a wide margin. Ask before buying whether monitoring can be cancelled without penalty and whether sensor batteries are standard sizes you can buy locally. Non-standard cells and discontinued sensors are where budgets quietly break.
Keep the original deadbolt, strike plate and keys in a bag before you install anything. Damage from battery leakage, water ingress or a forced entry is normally excluded, and some warranties require professional installation to stay valid. Before returning, restore the original hardware — a bored or shimmed frame can turn a refund into a repair bill.
