Light Switches FAQ
Size the box, not the faceplate. Count conductors first: line, load, neutral, ground, plus travelers if the switch sits on a three-way. Depth matters once you add a radio and thicker terminals, and a crowded box is where most installs go wrong. Write down your wire count and box depth before you compare models.
If there's no neutral bundle in the box, treat the category as mostly closed to you. Most smart switches need one to keep their radio powered while the load is off. The exceptions tend to trickle current through the fixture or lean on a hub. Confirm a neutral before you buy anything.
That's one of the axes that separates models here, alongside app reliability. A switch that only listens to the cloud becomes a dead plate when your router or hub fails; one that reports locally keeps working. Test it the week you install: kill the router's power and flip the switch. No response means you bought a cloud switch.
Almost nothing you replace — there's no consumable in the ordinary sense. The real upkeep is firmware plus the mechanical layer: re-checking terminal screws after the first month of thermal cycling, and confirming the neutral connection hasn't worked loose. This page compares on three axes only, so a short list here is a genuinely short list, not a rounded-up one.
Labor. If you're hiring an electrician, install time usually runs past the device price, and a box that needs rework gets charged twice. Add a hub if your model requires one, and a new wall plate if the old opening doesn't match. No pricing appears on this page, so compare on what the install demands rather than the sticker.
Whether a wired-in unit can come back at all. Once you've cut into the box and torqued terminals, many sellers treat it as installed rather than defective, so read the return terms and the warranty length before the screwdriver comes out. Confirm the model runs as a plain switch too — a warranty swap won't light the room tonight.
