Outlet Switches FAQ
Start with the box, not the switch. Count what's already in there — line, load, neutral, ground — and measure box depth before buying anything, because a shallow box limits what fits behind the device. Capacity matters more than face size: match the unit to the load it actually switches, and check whether it covers a single or multi-gang wall plate.
Check the box before the switch. Is it anchored to a stud, or does it flex when a cord is plugged in? A loose box will not hold a heavy device with something pulling on it. Then confirm line, load, neutral and ground are present and the breaker is off. In a rental, do not cut or rewire — use a plug-in module instead.
Test the mechanical layer first: with the app closed and Wi-Fi off, can you still switch the outlet by hand or with the physical button? If scheduling lives only in the cloud, an outage leaves the lamp dark. Scenes, energy graphs and voice control sit on top; the on/off relay is the part that has to work daily.
There are no consumables — no batteries, no bulbs, nothing to swap. Maintenance is a recovery checklist. Power cut: does it return to its last state or default to off? Router restart: does it rejoin on its own, or need a manual reset? Manual override: is there a physical button when the network stays down? Sealed units are not user-serviceable, so a failed relay means replacement.
The hidden line items are the box and the labour. Without a neutral, an electrician may be needed before any device fits. If the smart unit is deeper than the old receptacle, a new wall plate is extra. A hub adds cost on top. Multiply that by the gangs on your wall — and ask whether the device stays when you move.
Settle this before mounting, because removal is your problem. Keep the plate, screws and box packaging; many returns require a factory reset first. Coverage typically applies to the electronics, not to the labour of uninstalling it or repairing a damaged box. If the device cannot come out without cutting the box, the return is effectively yours.
