Electric Lanterns FAQ
Start from what you're lighting at dusk, not from the highest output on the box. A full-size body takes more cells and spreads light across a wider diffuser, so it holds usable brightness longer; a palm-size unit is the one that actually gets packed. Table for several people: size up. Hanging in a tent: size down.
Hang it by the bail or loop and leave the diffuser uncovered — a lantern pushed against tent fabric lights one direction only and throws the rest away. Stand it on a flat, dry surface when you use the base instead. Placement decides how much of a site you light: a centered hang beats a corner shelf every time.
Peak output sells lanterns; the figure worth reading is how long it holds a level you can still read by. This category compares runtime at usable brightness, charging options and water resistance — models publishing only a peak number don't make the shortlist. Check too that the flashing mode can be locked out; some sites and events don't allow it.
Two things: the seals and the port cover. Water resistance lives on those gaskets, so grit on the threads or a torn USB flap is what ends the claim, not the electronics. Carry a spare gasket if the maker sells one, plus a charging cable. If the cell isn't user-replaceable, the lantern's service life is the cell's.
Work out the running cost, not the shelf price. A lantern that eats disposable alkalines costs more across a few seasons than one with a sealed cell you charge from USB, and solar charging only pays off if you're genuinely camped in sun. The trade: sealed cells are cheaper to run and impossible to swap mid-trip.
Run a full charge cycle, then check the gaskets and the switch lockout while you can still send it back. Get the warranty's coverage of the cell in writing — a guarantee that skips the battery leaves you paying for the part most likely to fail. Keep the box until one charge cycle is done.
