Headlamps FAQ

Compact body or bigger housing — how do I choose?

Judge by the mode you'll live in, not the peak. A pre-dawn tee time needs one low setting you can keep on for the whole walk, not a headline number you'd never leave running. Same battery format in a bigger housing usually buys you more modes to trade output against runtime. Few lamps clear all three: lumen modes, battery format, bare-head comfort.

What has to be right about the mount before it's on my head?

The mount matters more than the spec sheet. On a bare head, no cap and no beanie, the band has to sit without a pressure point above the ears, and the housing has to stay put when you tilt your chin down to read a card. Check that the band clips are replaceable rather than glued. A top strap you can't remove is a dealbreaker under a cap.

Which modes will I actually use?

Most people pay for the headline mode and live in the middle one. Two or three levels with a switch you can find through gloves beat a dial you have to look down at. A physical lockout matters more than an extra mode: a lamp that switches on inside a pack is a dead cell at the trailhead in fog. Comfort on a bare head is the spec nobody prints.

What wears out, and what do I replace?

That depends on the battery format you chose. With disposable cells, the consumable is the cell — carry one, and check contacts if the lamp sits loaded for months. With a built-in rechargeable pack, the consumables are the pack and the headband. Assume the strap needs attention long before the emitter does. Buy a model whose band is sold separately.

What does this cost me over three seasons?

Do the math on cells, not on the sticker. Disposable formats look cheap at checkout, then take a steady drip of replacements; a rechargeable pack front-loads the cost and needs a cable and a socket you trust. Neither wins if the lamp comes out twice a year — then take the cheapest format and spare cells. Write the cost per season down before you commit.

What should the warranty cover — and what does it usually exclude?

Ask two things before paying: is the headband covered, and are cells or the rechargeable pack classed as wear items? Straps, clips and packs go first, and they're the parts most often excluded. Keep the receipt, because claims stall on proof of purchase rather than on the fault. If the listing names no battery format, walk.
