Carports FAQ

Canopy or steel?

Canopy is a three-to-five-winter purchase; steel is a structure that lasts decades but usually needs a permit and anchors.

What size for one car?

10x15 ft fits one car with door room; 12x20 ft is comfortable; 20x20 ft and up is the realistic two-car size.

Will it hold snow?

Steel carports are rated for a snow load; most canopies are not. In snow country, clear the canopy after every storm.

How do I anchor it?

Concrete anchors on a slab, asphalt anchors on a driveway, or ground screws in soil. Stakes alone will not hold in wind.

Do I need a permit?

Often yes for a permanent steel structure and rules vary by county and size. Check before ordering.

Can it be moved later?

Canopies yes, steel only if it is bolted rather than set in concrete, and even then it needs new anchors.
