Table & Chair Sets FAQ
Start with the room, not the product. Measure the wall run you'll back the table against, then subtract the pull-out depth a sitter needs behind each chair — that clearance, not the tabletop, decides capacity. Count usable sides: a top pushed against a wall serves only its open edges. Buy to the clearance, then to the top.
Measure the doorway's clear width and height, then the diagonal between those two points — a tabletop can clear width and still fail the diagonal once legs are fixed. Ask whether legs unbolt and whether the top ships detached. A stairwell with a turn is the real test. If the seller won't confirm knockdown legs, buy something you can carry flat.
Chairs fail before tabletops do, so check the chair frame first: solid wood or metal, with back and seat rails joined by more than glue. On the table, ask how the legs attach — bolted plates with machine screws outlast dowels alone. If a listing names no frame material and no joint type, don't rank it; you can't price an unknown.
Two recurring items: glide or felt pads under chair legs, and re-tightening leg and rail bolts as joints settle. The finish where hands and plates land wears first, along with the chair-back joint. Look for replaceable pads and reachable bolts. If a cushion is stitched shut or a joint is glued and doweled, refinishing means replacing the piece.
It goes into frame and joints, not the top. A set with bolted leg plates and solid chair frames can be re-tightened for years; a glued, doweled one becomes waste the first time a joint loosens. When two options differ only in tabletop thickness, take the thinner top. When they differ in joint type, pay for the joint.
Ask what's actually covered — frame and joints, or finish only — and who pays freight on a return, since these sets ship in more than one box. Confirm the return window runs long enough to assemble the table and sit in every chair. If a seller won't put joint coverage in writing, price the set as unreturnable.
