Generators FAQ

How do I size a generator for a winter outage?

Picture the outage: wet, heavy snow takes the lines down and you're starting a furnace blower, a well pump and a fridge the same evening. Size on peak watts for the largest motor plus running watts for everything on at once; manufacturers publish both. If you can't find a starting-watt figure for your pump, step up a size or accept load-shedding — in icy conditions, cold-motor restart is where undersized units fail.

Where can I put a generator when snow is drifting?

Placement is a snow problem before it's an electrical one. Exhaust has to point away from the house and away from the side the plow piles snow on; intakes buried in a drift stall the unit. Set it on a raised, dry pad above the snow line, never inside a garage or attached structure. If your only flat ground sits under the eave, budget for a wet-snow-rated cover.

How loud is a generator once it's actually carrying a load?

Noise is where the spec sheet lies to you: idle or eco figures get quoted, but the number that matters is noise at load, when the furnace blower and fridge compressor are both running. Sound carries farther over wet snow, and a storm-night outage means running past midnight. If noise at load isn't published, plan placement around your neighbors' windows, not yours.

What maintenance and consumables should I plan for?

The spec you should read last is whether it can be serviced without a dealer. Oil, filters, spark plugs and fuel stabilizer are the recurring consumables, and in a wet-snow week you're doing that work with mittens on, snow packed against the service panel. Clear the unit before servicing it, not after. If every part needs a dealer visit, an outage won't wait on that call.

What does this really cost over several winters?

Sticker price is the smallest number here. Add fuel burned per outage, oil and filters, dealer service if it can't be serviced at home, and dry storage — wet snow and freeze-thaw cycles are hard on fuel and covers. This category only verifies running vs peak watts, noise at load and dealer-free service, so treat other claims as unverified. If the purchase price is the only figure published, you're buying an unknown.

What should I check in the warranty and return terms?

Warranty value is set by who does the work: a long term with dealer-only service means every repair waits on a truck, and an outage in a wet-snow week won't. Check the return window and who pays freight both ways, because a generator is heavy and not a parcel you drop at a counter. If the terms don't say whether on-site service is included, price that worst case in.
