Quick answer: on most Amazon orders you have 30 days to return an item for a refund, and for a defective product Amazon pays the return postage. Beyond 30 days you are dealing with the manufacturer's warranty, which usually covers defects and never covers wear, accident or water damage.

The 30-day window

Thirty days from delivery is the standard window for items sold and shipped by Amazon. Third-party sellers set their own policy, and it is on the listing under Returns - read it before you buy, because a 14-day window from a marketplace seller is legal and common.

The condition matters more than the date. Electronics must come back with everything in the box, including the cable nobody keeps. Clothing must have tags. A returned item that arrives without its accessories can be refused or refunded at a reduced amount.

Who pays postage

If the item is defective, damaged or not what was described, Amazon pays. You print a label or drop it at a locker. If you simply changed your mind, you usually pay, unless the item is marked free returns - which is common in clothing and shoes because Amazon would rather absorb the postage than lose the sale.

Large items are the exception that catches people out. A treadmill or a patio set returned for preference can cost more in freight than the refund is worth. Measure twice.

Refunds, replacements and restocking fees

A refund goes back to the original payment method, typically three to five business days after the warehouse scans it. A replacement ships when the original is scanned, which is faster if you need the item. Restocking fees exist but are rare on Amazon itself; some marketplace sellers apply them and must disclose it.

What the manufacturer warranty covers

A one-year limited warranty typically covers defects in materials and workmanship. It does not cover a cracked screen, a battery that has simply aged, water ingress on a device that is not rated for it, or normal cosmetic wear. It usually requires proof of purchase and is valid only in the country of sale.

Register the product if the brand asks you to. Keep the order confirmation. When you claim, describe the failure in plain terms and include the order number - the first reply decides how the case is routed, and a clear first message gets a replacement instead of a questionnaire.

Extended warranties and protection plans

Third-party protection plans cost roughly 10-20% of the purchase price and mostly duplicate the first year of the manufacturer warranty. They earn their keep on two categories: items you will physically abuse (fitness equipment, tools) and items that fail expensively outside warranty (laptops, TVs, large appliances). For a $40 kitchen gadget, skip it.

What none of this covers

Buying from a marketplace seller who disappears. Check that the seller has a name, a rating and a history before you spend real money. If the price is far below every other listing for the same model, you are not lucky - you are the target.
