Noise-Cancelling Earbuds

What the Specs Do Not Tell You

Quick answer: the number that matters is not the decibels of noise cancellation, it is whether the earbuds seal your ear canal, how they behave in wind, and whether the battery lasts your commute with ANC on.

Seal beats software

Active noise cancellation works best on low, steady sound: engines, air conditioning, the hum of a train. It is much weaker on voices and sudden noise. A good passive seal from the right tip does more for the mid and high frequencies than any processing, which is why an inexpensive pair that fits well can beat an expensive pair that does not.

Buy for the tip sizes, not the brand. Most sets include three sizes; if your ears sit between them, foam tips are the cheap upgrade.

ANC depth is a lab number

"Up to 48dB" is measured in a chamber with a specific frequency sweep. Real-world performance on a bus is closer to a noticeable reduction than silence, and the figure does not tell you how it behaves when a gust of wind hits the microphone. Wind noise is the most common complaint for every brand.

Check whether there is a transparency mode and how natural it sounds. Being able to order a coffee without taking the earbuds out matters daily; the difference between 40dB and 48dB of cancellation does not.

Battery with ANC on

Manufacturers quote battery life with ANC off, and sometimes at half volume. Expect the real figure with cancelling enabled to be 60 to 70% of the headline, and check the case's total: a pair claiming eight hours per charge and 32 with the case is a different product from one claiming six and 24.

Wired charging on a case that only takes a cable is fine. Wireless charging is convenient and adds a few grams.

Codecs and latency

If you use an iPhone, the high-end Android codecs do not apply to you. If you game or watch video on Android, look for a low-latency mode, which usually has to be enabled manually and often reduces audio quality slightly. Multipoint pairing, which keeps a laptop and a phone connected at once, is a genuinely useful feature that nobody advertises prominently.

Fit and water resistance

Runner and gym users should check the IP rating: IPX4 handles sweat and light rain, IPX5 or better handles a downpour. For office use, the priority is comfort over an eight-hour day, and the only way to know is to wear them for an hour with the largest tip that still fits.

What to ignore

Claims of "hi-res audio" on a Bluetooth earbud, driver size in millimetres, and any frequency response chart. None of them predicts whether the seal, the battery and the wind handling suit your commute.
