How to Spot Fake or Manipulated Amazon Reviews
Inflated ratings follow a pattern. Five checks that take two minutes, from the review timeline to the wording of five-star one-liners.

Written and dated by our editors.

Quick answer: read the three-star reviews first, then check whether the five-star ones arrived in a burst on the same few days. Real reviews trickle in over months and disagree with each other. Bought reviews arrive in clusters and agree too neatly.
Check 1: the timeline, not the total
A rating of 4.6 from 12,000 reviews tells you very little on its own. What matters is when the reviews landed. Open the review section, sort by most recent, and look at the dates. A product that collected 400 reviews in one week and almost none since was either launched with a push, incentivised, or covered by a media event. None of those tell you how it performs in month six.
Check 2: the language of a bought review
Bought reviews describe feelings; real reviews describe use. "Absolutely love it, great quality, fast shipping" could be written by someone who never opened the box. "The clamp is too narrow for a 2-inch desk, I had to shim it with cardboard" could only come from someone who did.
Watch for reviews that restate the listing bullet points as if they were discoveries, and for a run of five-star reviews that all mention the same unrelated detail - the same gift, the same trip, the same relative.
Check 3: the reviews that were not invited
The most useful review on most listings is the two- or three-star one, because the writer has no reason to exaggerate. Filter to three stars and read five of them. If the complaints repeat - a battery that dies at nine months, a lid that leaks, an app that lost support - that is the product telling you the truth.
Check 4: Vine and "reviewer" badges
Amazon's Vine programme gives free products to reviewers in exchange for an honest review. That is disclosed on the review, and Vine reviews are usually better written than average, but they are written days after delivery. They cannot tell you about durability. Read them for setup and first impressions, not for longevity.
Check 5: cross-check outside Amazon
Search the brand name plus "problems" or "recall", and look for a support forum or a subreddit. Amazon reviews cannot be edited into a service history, but forums can be read backwards. A brand that answers complaints in public for three years is a different proposition from one that launched last spring.
What we do about it
Our guides rank on specifications and hands-on criteria, and we say which criteria we weighted. When a product's rating looks inflated, we say so in the entry rather than quietly dropping it - the rating is data about the market, not about the product.
One last habit worth keeping: if a listing has thousands of reviews but no review older than a year, treat it as a new product wearing an old listing. Sellers do inherit listings, and the reviews belong to whatever was sold before.
