Quick answer: wait for sales on seasonal goods and big appliances; buy sooner on consumables, safety items and anything you need this week. A discount you wait three months for is not a discount if you needed the thing in April.

Categories that reliably go on sale Seasonal goods follow the calendar: patio furniture and grills in late summer, fans and air conditioners in September, heaters in March. Large appliances and televisions cluster around major promotional events because manufacturers plan their discounts around them.

Categories where waiting rarely pays Consumables, refills and small accessories rarely move more than a few percent - there is not enough margin to discount them. Safety equipment, replacement parts and anything on a deadline should be bought when you need it.

The 20% rule If the current price is within roughly 20% of the lowest you have seen, buy it. Chasing the last 10% costs weeks of waiting and risks the exact model selling out while you watch.

Watch the model, not the category Prices move on individual listings, not on whole categories. Set a price alert on the specific model - category-wide sales often skip the one you actually researched.

Beware the 'deal' that is a different product Retailers rotate cheaper variants into sale events: less capacity, fewer accessories, the previous generation. Compare the model number, not the product photo.

If you need it now, buy it now The exception to every rule is time. Saving $40 on something you needed a week ago is not a saving.

The short version Wait on seasonal and big-ticket items when the calendar is on your side. Buy immediately on consumables, safety gear and anything with a deadline. Set one price alert on the exact model you want, and let it tell you when to move.
